Seeds of Ilm

Seeds of Ilm

Seeds of Ilm (knowledge) is the Khadija Leadership Network’s biennial conference.

Seeds of Ilm (SOI) is about exploring the intellectual diversity of the Muslim world juxtaposed with the Muslim diaspora. Our conference aims to draw out local and global debates, examine community development and policy approaches, and identify innovative strategies to stimulate a progressive response to the relationship between faith-based communities and states.

The conference aims to bring together members of the Muslim and other faith-based communities, government officials, and both third and private sector representatives from across New Zealand and beyond to engage in identifying, understanding, and responding to Islam and Muslims.

The conference also provides an opportunity for a diverse audience to effectively connect and communicate with the growing complexities around us. SOI is our aspiration to enable healthy, innovative, and progressive dialogue amongst multiple actors. The conference is an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, raise awareness of and collaborate on what is happening across the diverse Muslim communities.

Our first conference was held in 2018 with the theme: Tūrangawaewae: Exploring identity & belonging for Muslim New Zealanders. SOI18 presentations covered the following five sub themes:

  • Hybrid Muslim identities
  • Evolution of Islam in New Zealand and Australia
  • Prejudice and discrimination against Muslims
  • The impact on the Muslim identity of the current discourse on global terrorism & national security
  • The future of multiculturalism
The conference was held at the Auckland University of Technology South Campus.

Stay tuned for our next conference in November 2020.
