Seeds of Ilm is about exploring the intellectual diversity of the Muslim world juxtaposed with the Muslim diaspora. The conference aims to draw out local and global debates, examine community development and policy approaches, and identify innovative strategies to stimulate a progressive response to the relationship between faith-based communities and states.

The conference aims to bring together members of the Muslim and other faith-based communities, government officials, and both third and private sector representatives from across New Zealand and Australia to engage in identifying, understanding, and responding to Islam and Muslims.

The conference will provide an opportunity for a diverse audience to effectively connect and communicate with the growing complexities around us. Seeds of Ilm is our aspiration to enable healthy, innovative, and progressive dialogue amongst multiple actors. The conference is an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, raise awareness of and collaborate on what is happening across New Zealand and Australia's diverse Muslim communities.

The theme of the 2018 conference was Tūrangawaewae: Exploring identity & belonging for Muslim New Zealanders; giving you the opportunity to present your ideas and research on identity and belonging in the 21st century. #SOI18 will focus on the following five sub-themes:

  • Hybrid Muslim identities
